About the Production

JCC on the Cohn Campus is hosting
ThinkTank's Fall Production of
A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Welcome to the Athenian, a summer beach resort that has just expanded its residency by acquiring the nearby Amazon Resort and Spa. The owners of the resorts, Theseus and Hippolyta, will formally merge their two companies in a grand ceremony to be held at the end of the week; however, the lead up to the celebration isn't without issues.

Summer residents at the Athenian have their own capers to sort through. Egeus has pledged his daughter Hermia's hand to Demetrius, but Hermia loves another summer resident, Lysander. To top this off, Demetrius has played a little "summer lovin'" with Hermia's best friend, Helena, who has fallen hard for Demetrius. So, what else is young love to do but run off to the beach to sort it all out.

Meanwhile, the Athenian resort employees have a task of their own. Head concierge, Peter Quince, has gathered his skilled crew: Nick Bottom - the surf instructor, Francis Flute - heating and air maintenance, Snug - carpenter, Tom Snout - onsite auto maintenance, and Robin Starling - resort tailor, to produce a play for the Athenian/Amazon merger celebration.

Then, of course, there are the fairies, who also work at the Athenian where quarrels abound. Oberon, the bartender, is going through a messy breakup from his lover, Titania, the featured resort lounge singer. Oberon, along with his barback, Puck, devise a plan to trick Titania into giving up a young child she has recently adopted, and humiliate her fellow fairy band members as well. As they plot, Oberon overhears the argument of lovesick Helena and angry Demetrius, and figures he can assist in these efforts too. Oberon sends Puck out with a task and strict instructions.

Celebrations to plan, plays to rehearse, lovers on the run, fairy magic, what could go wrong?

Audition Preparation:

Please prepare a one minute classical or heightened-language comedic monologue and choose one side to read for your audition. (A reader will be present at the audition.)

Please note we might ask you to read another side at auditions.
Other Items to Note:
-
While we want to honor the beauty of the verse written in Shakespeare's words, this production will take place in an intimate space. As such, for this production, we are looking for a natural, modern flow with the language. (In other words, find your natural voice with the text, but bring all the big energy that makes it work. We're at the Athenian in 2025.)
-
Though we will not ask you to sing, there will be some music and choreography incorporated into this production.

Character Descriptions:

Theseus (M) - The owner of the Athenian Resort. An honest businessman with a bit of a temper.

DOUBLES WITH-

Oberon (M) - The local bartender, but really the King of the Fairies. Loves Titania, but prideful and a bit jealous. (Experience with bartending or mixing cocktails a plus, but not a requirement.)

Hippolyta (F) - The owner of the (former) Amazon Resort and Spa. Holds her own, knows when her words matter and saves them until they will make a mark.

DOUBLES WITH-

Titania (F) - The Athenian's Featured Summer Vocalist, but really she's the Queen of the Fairies. Also loves Oberon, but she's is done with his jealous behavior. (A singer, and perhaps the ability to play guitar, or other stringed instrument, a plus, but not a requirement)

Puck (Any Gender) - The resort barback, but really Oberon's fairy sidekick. A bit of a flirt and knack for bragging. Means well, but tends to mess things up.

DOUBLES WITH-

Egeus (Any Gender) - Athenian Resort Resident and Hermia's father (or mother). Rich and arrogant.

Hermia (F) - A young resident at the Athenian, Egus' daughter, in love with Lysander. Sweet and modest, but don't let that fool you.
Helena (F) - A young resident at the Athenian, she is Hermia's bestfriend, and lovesick over Demetrius. Let's her emotions get the best of her and hasn't figured out how to play hard-to-get.
Lysander (M) - A young resident at the Athenian, he is in love with Hermia. Honest, decisive, and gentle. But he will fight if necessary.
Demetrius (M) - A young resident at the Athenian, betrothed to Hermia, and claims to be in love with her. (Though he did lead Helena on, and now he's paying for it.)

Nick Bottom (M) - The resort surf instructor and definitely has that earthy way about him. Talks too much, annoys others, but is a decent actor.

Peter Quince (Any Gender) - The resort concierge, patient, but quick to let you know he is in charge.

The Mechanicals (Any Gender):
Francis Flute, Snug, Tom Snout, and Robin Starveling
